Room 23 - Tran Thanh Kieu Trang Empty Room 23 - Tran Thanh Kieu Trang

    Post by Trang/Vietnam Wed Jan 26, 2011 8:36 am

Trang slowly lifted her eyes, leaving them half-opened. For some reason, she was more restless than normal, like having been running for hours on end. Her eyelids felt like they were made of lead. Even the fact that she was waking up barely registered. It was as if an invisible but formidable force constantly hauled her towards the serene realm of slumber. As reality and dream mingled, Trang was rather disturbed by the oblivion.

She rolled sideways, hoping the motion would pull her from that suspended mode. The bed felt colder than usual... The Vietnamese curled up for warmth but something cold pressing against the wrist thwart her intention. An indistinct clattering sound immediately followed, echoing in her head...

Her eyes widened as realization struck her. Having worked here for 2 years, she was already used to hearing sudden scream and this sound...

    A CHAIN!

Lying stiffened still, Trang slowly lifted her hand. A chain? A deep furrow appeared on her face. With almost no light in the confined room, everything seemed utterly surreal. Is this reality? Or am I still in the dream? Trang didn't really have the strength to distinguish it anymore. She slowly shut her eyes once more...

Suddenly, the images of her patients flooding in her mind gave Trang a fright. Her eyes sprung open. Her conscience started functioning properly again. The situation she was in now, it would make more sense if she was... a patient! A difficult one at that! The young girl squinted at the cold metal around her wrist. There's no mistaking it, one hand of her was tied down by a bulky chain. She willed her body to move and rise from the bed as a vague sense of fear seized her.

    "What is going on here!?"

... Hopefully it's not too dramatized ene

Anyway, COOL NUMBER 23 TAKEN!!!! HEHE~

Advertising: "The Number 23 Enigma" refers to the belief that most incidents and events are directly connected to the number 23, some modification of the number 23, or a number related to the number 23.
It is really cool~! <3 *learnt about this from Yao, and was given a whole website full of cool facts* http://afgen.com/numbr23b.html

Room 23 - Tran Thanh Kieu Trang Empty Re: Room 23 - Tran Thanh Kieu Trang

The walls of the third floor in the central wing echoed. Whether this was done purposefully when the building was constructed, he could not tell for sure. Yao had always taken note of small details, especially in that place. It was never a rare occurrence to hear patients crying out in agony or anger behind their doors as one would journey down the long hallways, but when the voices echoed, the noise seemed to form a curious dirge that would pursue the traveler along their path.

A dirge, how faultlessly ironic it seemed. In the preceding night, a recently emitted patient had been killed by a member of the staff. A nurse had been with the woman when the act was committed, but she too suffered a consequence. The only witness they had was now in a state of coma. For now, no one could why such a thing would happen, or even how it happened. For now, all that they had was pieces of the puzzle, but no hands to fit them together.

With a weary mind, the doctor left his office, locking the door behind him. The young woman who had been sedated and placed under immediate facility protection was an old friend of his. The two had met during their studies and in time, Yao became something of an elder brother to her. She had always been bright and perceptive, shy but very strong.

Regardless, it had certainly been a sleepless night. An announcement was made over the intercom announcing that a complete lock-down of the first floor was in effect until further notice, but things were being taken care of as quickly as they could be. It did not need to be stated specifically. Everyone who heard the announcement knew that someone had been killed.

Lost in thought, he didn’t even realize that he had reached his destination.
The sign near the door was covered with a thin veil of rust, but the numbering stood out as clearly as it would have many years ago. Glancing back at the slip of paper in his pocket, he glanced once more to make certain it was correct.

    Twenty-three.

As much as he tried to make himself believe the rumors were false or at least that there was some sort of misconception in the information he had been given, he knew that his will would not erase the truth. Strange, the way the human mind worked sometimes, for it was only after the doctor unlocked the heavy door and pulled it back that his hope had diminished.

She was there upon a rickety old bed with naught but a thin blanket beneath her body. One of her slender wrists was chained securely to the wall and her face was pale with horror. His friend whom he looked upon as a little sister was thrown into the position of the patients she had tended to.

“Trang…?” Yao said in a whisper, face contorted with bewilderment. “How… What happened…?”

Room 23 - Tran Thanh Kieu Trang Empty Re: Room 23 - Tran Thanh Kieu Trang

Trang supported her upper body with both elbows, attempting to sit up. The old bed creaked loudly as if to protest against her endeavor. Fumbling for the hedge behind her, she put all of her strength into lifting her body and painstakingly dragging it towards the rusty bars.

After an arduous struggle, Trang finally managed to put herself in a sitting position at the head of the bed. If at all possible, she aspired to avoid sinking even more into oblivion. Therefore, little did wobbling on bed seem to affect the distressing state, it was worthy of her effort still. This, as her senses of touch and sight had attested during the process, was reality...

With head leaning back on the about-to-fall-off bars, Trang simply lay there, staring at the dusty ceiling to catch her breath. She was not a robust being by birth, but at no time was she this decrepit. She glanced at her shaky hands. Since when could sleep deprive her of so much strength and agility? Noticing the chain on her wrist again, Trang's eyes promptly traced the length of the intimidating figure. It was sturdily attached to the thick wall. Given the situation she was in, this exhaustion, if truly was what had been mentioned with fear and disgust by her patients occasionally, could only be caused by one thing.

    Sedation.

A clicking sound echoed in the room, startling the young woman. The lock on the only door turned and the whole heavy bulk steadily moved aside. Trang lifted her head, turning it towards the entrance. Suddenly, light from the corridor blinded her vision. The Vietnamese raised one hand to cover her eyes, yearning to make out the figure standing at the threshold. A... doctor? Her face turned pale as soon as the white uniform could be seen through the narrow gaps between her fingers.

She hurriedly rubbed her fuzzy eyes, forcing them to adapt. Once again, the ambiguity struck terror into her, especially in this seemingly ridiculous situation. Is that a doctor... her colleague? Her throat felt dry. She was treated like a patient... Why was she tended to exactly like a patient now!? Her eyes stubbornly riveted on the human figure. She unconsciously held her breath. The door stopped, revealing a man in white blouse. Trang felt her heart skip a beat when the scene finally registered into her eyes.

    "Y-Yao?"

He stood there with a face plastered with bewilderment. His normal clear and crisp voice was toned down into a whisper, as if to suppress a whirlpool of emotions. Trang had known the doctor for quite a long time, but never had she saw Yao with such expression. For a calm and stable man such as himself, the images she had in her memory were mostly always of him wearing a gentle, knowing smile. She knew she did nothing wrong. She knew there must be some sort of misunderstanding. But seeing such a person in so much shock, hearing those half-enquiring, half-accusing questions coming from the one she deemed as a second elder brother and feeling the weight of the chain on her wrist left her stupefied and mumbling for words.

"I-I do not know... How... I..."

Trang blinked non-stop at young doctor as guilt ate her up from inside. She frantically scanned her memory, seeking the answer to his sudden questions, and to her own as well. Why was she patient? This went against all plausible reasoning! A sudden headache interrupted her train of thought. Trang promptly swiveled her head to face the wall and squeezed her eyes shut. Holding her head with one hand, she tried to shake off the pain, but to no avail. In this miserable state, Trang felt like she was stuck in some kind of drunken stupor… except that, much to her dismay, this was the only reality.
